General Description
254SMO (UNS N31254) is often referred to as a grade of “6% Moly” due to its molybdenum content. 254SMO is an austenitic stainless steel with high level of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen, which gives its a good resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in environments containing halide ions, e.g. chloride, bromide and fluoride solutions. Compared with Alloy 904L, Alloy 20, Alloy 825, 254SMO has superior chloride resistance and is specially suited for high chloride environments such as brackish water or seawater.
Applications for 254SMO include petroleum production, saltwater handling, food processing and chemical processing equipment, pulp mill bleach systems, flue gas desulphurization scrubbers and tall oil distillation columns.
